You never think of a boss as being inflexible, but it happens. To meet with the funeral director, the woman took a sick day. After that, her boss started scheduling her for more hours than usual. She found herself being forced to work both weekend days and three or four additional days during the work week. She needed the money, but the additional hours felt like a punishment. She started questioning how she could balance her job with the additional demands as a family caregiver.
Laws May Help You.
The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) is there to help you take time off from work to care for a family member. You get 12 weeks. However, you have to have worked for the company for a full year. Your employer must have at least 50 employees within a 75-mile range. You also must have worked an average of 24 to 25 hours per week. If you don’t meet all of those conditions, you won’t qualify for FMLA.
Ask About Working at Home.
Depending on your job, you may be able to work some hours from home. You should ask your boss about the possibility of working from home part-time and from the office the additional hours. Be prepare to present why it will benefit your boss.
The company saves electricity costs by keeping your work computer and office lights off for a few days a week. You also won’t be using office supplies and drinking items like water and coffee that the company pays for. Studies also find that telecommuting workers tend to work harder and longer hours than those working from an office outside the home.
